Dental Check Up & Dental Cleaning Services in West Vancouver

Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for your overall health. It isn’t enough to brush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash twice daily to have a beautiful smile. It would help if you also had regular check-ups and dental cleanings. Regular appointments allow your dentist to take a proactive approach to prevent issues before they transpire.

Are you tired of dull-looking teeth? Plaque and tarter continually build up on the teeth. While regular brushing and flossing can remove some of it, it doesn’t completely eliminate all of it. This is when semi-annual appointments are beneficial. Dentists do more than just check on your oral health. They also clean plaque/tartar, helping you maintain a brighter, whiter, and healthier smile.

Maintain Your Smile with Regular Dental Cleanings & Check-Ups

Regular exams are essential in promoting the overall health of your mouth, gums, and teeth. At a routine exam, dentists can assist in the following:

What to Expect During Dental Check-Ups

Dental cleanings give you a brighter smile, but that isn’t all they do. Before polishing and cleaning stains off your teeth, our dentists first conduct a dental hygiene exam to check gums and teeth for indications of tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer.

They take x-rays to examine the roots of the teeth underneath the gums. However, this is optional during each visit. If any areas of concern arise, we will recommend a treatment plan to deal with them. Furthermore, we take a proactive approach to dental health, preventing issues before they become a problem. We will also let you know if we note any areas of concern that can be controlled.

What You Can Expect During a Dental Cleaning

Dental cleanings (scaling) will give you a brighter smile, but that is not all they do. Teeth cleaning treatments last thirty to sixty minutes. The length of the appointment will depend on the level of oral hygiene. As mentioned earlier, dental cleanings are essential in removing plaque, tartar, and accumulated stains on the teeth from certain foods/beverages.

Our dental assistants or dentists will do a deep dental cleaning to remove calculus and plaque from the teeth. Plaque forms an invisible film consisting of food, bacteria, and saliva on the teeth. This build-up can lead to tooth decay and cavities.

As plaque hardens, it leads to calculus. Calculus requires specialized dental cleaning tools for removal. Therefore, regular dental appointments are necessary to eliminate plaque from your mouth.

Our dentists/dental hygienists are experienced at reaching challenging areas of the mouth with special tools designed to scrape the plaque. They clean the spaces between the teeth with special tools and flossing techniques. We use a Prophy-Jet, which uses abrasive powders, water, and pressurized air to remove soft debris, plaque, and stains. Afterwards, your mouth is rinsed.

Next, our staff polishes your teeth. We use a rotating head and dental paste tool to add shine to your teeth. Once your teeth are cleaned and polished, our experienced team applies a layer of fluoride to strengthen your enamel. Fluoride treatments can either be a gel, paste, or varnish.

At the end of the appointment, we will discuss proper dental hygiene. We may also recommend items which will keep your teeth healthy between visits.

Why Are Regular Dental Check-Ups and Cleanings Important?

Regular semi-annual appointments are necessary to maintain good oral health. Even the best home routine containing flossing and brushing cannot eliminate the amount of bacteria in your mouth that can form a cavity.

The build-up of tartar along the gums causes issues like tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease. Regular dental exams prevent these issues. It will also catch them before they progress.

Dental cleanings/polishings assist in making teeth look healthier. Food and beverages we consume daily can stain our teeth. Often, we are unaware of which ones they are, but they can make our teeth look dull. Furthermore, our teeth become dull as we age. As we grow older, our enamel tends to wear, which also creates a dull smile.

However, regular cleanings protect our teeth from damage creating a more youthful, healthier smile.

How Often Should I Have my Teeth Cleaned and Examined?

Your overall oral health determines the frequency of visits. People with healthy teeth and gums require preventative care either semi-annually or annually. More frequent visits may be necessary if your teeth accumulate calculus and plaque quickly. You may need to come for more frequent visits if we notice signs of gum disease or misaligned teeth.

You may be required to come in more frequently if you are at risk for tooth loss or periodontitis (gum disease). Higher risks for gum disease include people who:

  • Smoke tobacco
  • Are diagnosed with diabetes
  • There is a family history containing gum disease

Everyone’s teeth are different. Your oral health needs will determine treatment schedules.

Tooth Cleaning & Check-Up FAQs

How do I keep my teeth clean after my dental cleaning?

Our team will instruct you on how to properly maintain good hygiene. Good oral health depends on proper brushing and flossing methods and regularly caring for the teeth.

On the other hand, keeping your teeth white may involve eliminating dark foods and beverages from your diet. Drinks like coffee or sodas can stain your teeth, dulling your smile. The same goes for some fruits and soy sauce.

Why is it necessary to have professional teeth cleaning?

Professional cleanings remove the accumulation of stains, plaque, and tartar that naturally build up along the gum line.
